Prison Artwork: Stories That Open Conversations

Through artwork created by incarcerated and formerly incarcerated artists, we share personal stories that are often overlooked. Each piece offers a unique window into human experience, creativity, resilience, and reflection.

Some artwork may be featured in exhibits, some may become available through future sales or auctions, and some pieces are preserved to support educational and community engagement efforts. Together, these works help spark meaningful conversations about justice, humanity, redemption, and the people behind the system.

About Artist: At 55, Walker has spent decades creating art, painting daily both in his cell and throughout Trenton State Prison. Using discarded materials, handmade pigments, and unwavering determination, he transforms limited resources into powerful works of creativity and expression. Walker views his talent as a gift from God and continues to use art as a source of purpose, resilience, and hope.

Hi there! My name is Alex, and I'm a sociology pre-law major at Duke University. Volunteering with Impartial helped me recognize the deeply personal aspect of incarceration in the United States. Here, I’m encouraged to understand criminal justice through a more personal and cultural lens, and Impartial has helped me create opportunities for others to do the same.

I chose to intern with Impartial, because I saw an organization that desired to hear its community in its pursuit of justice. I was looking for a way that I could meaningfully contribute to my community, so when I saw a volunteer opportunity for a criminal justice research writer, I reached out.
