This past year, I focused on the power of asking one thoughtful question:
- “Can you help me understand?”
I found it to be transformative. These five words:
- Show genuine interest and care.
- Shift the focus away from me and onto the other person.
- Open the door to meaningful, insightful answers.
In today’s culture, divisiveness often overshadows common ground. For example, during elections, this intensified, with labels creating barriers. Political affiliations become a litmus test for relationships, burying the deeper reasons why we value one another.
I’ve realized that many voters prioritize one or two key issues that directly affect them, like inflation or job security, while discarding all other considerations. These decisions are deeply personal and shaped by their lived experiences. Understanding why someone holds a belief or makes a choice is crucial.
When we truly want to understand someone, we need to ask about their “why.” And when they share, we must listen without judgment. Dismissing or disparaging their reasons only closes the door to understanding. Instead, view it as an opportunity to learn. If their “why” isn’t immediately clear, dig deeper. Often, their reasoning may be more complex than it seems. Knowing their reasoning may help you share yours too.
I hold the belief that we are far more alike as a society than we are different.
Leading a company called “Impartial” has sensitized me even more so to withholding judgment. This practice has enriched my interactions and allowed me to connect more deeply with others. The more I apply this mindset, the more I see its impact.
In 2024, I’ve prioritized empathy, curiosity, and openness. I don’t have to agree but it does give me a path to connecting more meaningfully and for that, I am grateful.
Thank you for allowing me to serve this community. All the best for 2025!
